The Preschool Curriculum – Sugar Land

The Montessori method at our preschool in Sugarland, Tx utilizes exercises and material in the classroom that await each child’s “moment of discovery” in various areas.  The materials are innately enticing, appealing to the child’s natural interests and instincts, and actively engage him or her in “academic discovery,” learning, and work. They provide a progression from hands on learning to abstraction, involve physical movement, are aesthetically designed, isolate one skill problem, and allow for self-correction.

Materials/Exercises can be divided into four main groups:

Practical Life practical life

This area of the preschool curriculum refines everyday gestures, activities and behaviors which the child sees the adults around him perform. Exercises focus learning on caring for himself and the environment, social behaviours and movement. This area develops concentration, co-ordination, social skills, and independence.

Sensorialsensorial

This area refines the child’s sense of discrimination. The materials and exercises do not present the child with new impressions, but rather order, categorize and systemize the vast assortment of impressions he/she has already received and will continually go on receiving. The child will learn to materialize abstractions on their own.

Academicacademic language

Language: Children in our preschool Montessori environment are introduced to reading and writing phonetically through the use of hands on materials that focus on vocabulary development, the preparation of the hand for writing and the introduction of the sounds of the letters of the alphabet.

Math: In a preschool Montessori environment, mathematics is approached in a concrete hands-on manner. Beginning with materials to understand the concepts of 1 to 10, the child is then able to move into all areas of mathematics learning about larger numbers (1, 10, 100, 1000’s), teens, skip counting, and fractions all in their concrete form. Mathematically abstraction comes later in the elementary program.

Science, geography, history and a second language are also introduced.

Cultural

These areas are supplemented and enriched by additional activities in the classroom such as group theme work, music appreciation, singing, choral speech, creative movement, arts, and games on our Sugar Land TX Campus.

Daily Schedule

Before Preschool Program Begins

6:30 – 8:30: Open Floor Time

Regular Preschool Day Begins

8:30 – 9:30: Breakfast Time
9:00 – 9:30: Circle Time, group activities, and story time
9:30 – 10:00: Outside play, exercise, and gross motor development
10:00 – 11:00: Exploration, free play, sensorial, fine motor, and speech & language activities
11:00 – 11:30: Lunch Time
11:30 – 2:30: Freshen Up and Nap Time
2:30 – 3:00: Wake up, song & dance

Regular School Day Ends & After School Program Begins

3:00 – 3:30: Snack time
3:30 – 4:30: Story time, singing, and action games
4:30 – 6:30: Discovery time, arts & crafts, individual and group play.

After Preschool Program Ends
